Here at Oxenford State School, we teach two lessons per week of the Japanese language for grades five and six. These classes aim to not only give students practical and theoretical skills in communicating in Japanese, but also insight into the Japanese culture. All lessons are in line with the national curriculum ACARA. Classroom lessons cover interesting topics such as introducing oneself, discussing favourite spaces and talking about family. In LOTE we provide a platform for students to not only practise their fluency, but also have fun and entertain each other. For instance, the unit that focuses on family, gives students the opportunity to apply learning, by preparing and reciting a speech on their own family before classmates. Threaded throughout the two-year program students learn about the Japanese alphabets, everyday vocabulary, expressions, Japanese grammar and how to apply this knowledge to real life contexts.
